Client: City of Delta
Location: Delta, BC
Program: Community. Recreation
Set against the pragmatic backdrop of modular construction, the Delta Container Facility rethinks the potential of shipping containers as civic architecture. The project explores how a rigid, industrial system can be transformed into a meaningful public space—one that balances efficiency with design intent, and modular constraint with spatial generosity.
What began as a compact, single-storey concept gradually expanded to meet evolving community needs. The design now accommodates a vertical lift, universal change rooms, accessible washrooms, and a flexible training room, all distributed across two levels. Each element has been carefully integrated within the strict geometries of container modules, demanding precision and restraint throughout the design process.
While the use of containers imposes clear structural boundaries, it also invited moments of invention—particularly in the handling of thresholds, light, and circulation. The result is a composition that creates both clear function and unexpected spatial richness, offering a layered experience beyond its modular frame.
Now under construction, the facility reflects Delta’s commitment to progressive design and inclusive public infrastructure. Continued collaboration with city stakeholders has grounded the project in local values, while allowing it to quietly assert itself as a symbol of thoughtful, future-forward architecture.
