GardenWorks, a BC-based gardening store, relocated from the City of North Vancouver to the District of North Vancouver. The new site, situated between a residential neighborhood and the industrial waterfront, featured an existing wood-frame building that was retained as part of GardenWorks' commitment to sustainable re-use. This approach preserved the environmental value of the original structure while transforming it into a modern retail space.
The new facility housed the retail gardening center along with its associated interior and exterior support spaces. The industrial character of the original building complemented the indoor-outdoor experience, making it ideal for a year-round retail operation. At the redesigned entry, a wood soffit contrasted with the charcoal grey industrial cladding, creating a welcoming gesture while respecting the building’s heritage. New glazed openings on both the east and north elevations provided views into the store, activating the street front and offering a sense of openness.
The building layout was carefully designed to support smooth large-scale retail movement, with key features like the botanical bar and tropical zone centrally located to minimize congestion and enhance the customer experience.
