GardenWorks is a BC-based gardening store. This project involves relocating an established store from the City of North Vancouver to the District of North Vancouver. The new site, which sits between a residential neighbourhood and the industrial waterfront, is occupied by an existing wood-frame building which will be retained as part of Gardenworks’s commitment to sustainable re-use. The new facility will house the retail gardening centre and its interior and exterior retail and support spaces. The industrial nature of the existing building lends well to the indoor-outdoor experience of the year-round facility while at the redesigned building entry, a wood soffit contrasts with the charcoal grey finish of the retained industrial cladding. New glazed openings on both the east and north elevations provide views in and out of the store, helping to activate the street front. The building has been designed for smooth large-scale retail movement and centralizes unique features of the gardening store such as its botanical bar and tropical zone while minimizing congestion between retail areas.
